myocardial stunning

Temporary myocardial dysfunction following ischemia-reperfusion that recovers over time.

Full Definition

Myocardial stunning is a reversible form of myocardial dysfunction that occurs after a period of ischemia followed by reperfusion, commonly seen after cardiac surgery. The myocardium exhibits reduced contractility despite restoration of normal coronary blood flow and absence of irreversible tissue damage. This phenomenon can persist for hours to days postoperatively and may require temporary inotropic support. Unlike myocardial necrosis, stunning represents viable tissue that will recover function given adequate time and supportive care.

Usage

Usage note: Often used to explain temporary postoperative cardiac dysfunction.
