The systematic adjustment of intravascular volume and venous return to maximize cardiac output while avoiding ventricular overdistension. This process is critical in cardiac anesthesia as it directly impacts surgical conditions and postoperative outcomes. Preload optimization requires careful monitoring of filling pressures, echocardiographic assessment, and understanding of individual patient physiology. The goal is to position the patient on the optimal portion of the Frank-Starling curve.
