pulsatile flow

Blood flow that maintains physiologic pressure variations during cardiopulmonary bypass, as opposed to non-pulsatile roller pump flow.

Full Definition

A mode of perfusion during cardiac surgery that attempts to replicate the natural pulsatile nature of cardiac output. Unlike standard roller pump systems that provide continuous flow, pulsatile flow maintains pressure variations that may improve organ perfusion and reduce inflammatory response. This technique is sometimes used in high-risk patients or prolonged procedures to potentially preserve renal and cerebral function.
