Abnormal heart rhythms that occur when blood flow is restored to previously ischemic myocardium during cardiac surgery.
Full Definition
Cardiac rhythm disturbances that commonly develop when coronary circulation is re-established after a period of cardioplegic arrest or ischemia. These arrhythmias result from electrolyte shifts, calcium overload, and cellular membrane instability during the transition from ischemia to reperfusion. Common patterns include ventricular ectopy, accelerated rhythms, or temporary conduction blocks. While often transient and self-limiting, severe reperfusion arrhythmias may require pharmacologic intervention or electrical cardioversion.
