ST-segment elevation

An ECG finding indicating acute myocardial ischemia or injury during cardiac procedures.

Full Definition

ST-segment elevation is an electrocardiographic finding characterized by elevation of the ST segment above the baseline, typically indicating acute myocardial ischemia or injury. In cardiac anesthesia, ST-segment changes are continuously monitored as early indicators of myocardial compromise during surgery. Elevation greater than 1-2mm in specific lead combinations can indicate regional ischemia, inadequate cardioplegia delivery, or coronary artery compromise. Prompt recognition and intervention are essential to prevent irreversible myocardial damage.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate ST-segment when used as a compound modifier.

In Context

  • "Significant ST-segment elevation was noted in leads II, III, and aVF during coronary manipulation." — anesthesia record
  • "The ST-segment elevation resolved after improving cardioplegia delivery." — intraoperative note
