Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia - a common regular supraventricular tachycardia involving dual AV nodal pathways.

Full Definition

Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) is the most common form of regular supraventricular tachycardia, characterized by a reentrant circuit within or immediately adjacent to the AV node. The arrhythmia typically involves dual AV nodal pathways: a slow pathway with shorter refractory period and a fast pathway with longer refractory period. During typical AVNRT, conduction proceeds antegrade down the slow pathway and retrograde up the fast pathway. Patients typically experience sudden onset and termination of rapid regular palpitations. AVNRT can often be terminated with vagal maneuvers and is highly amenable to curative catheter ablation.
