CRT-D

Also written as: CRT-D — Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator

Cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator combining biventricular pacing with defibrillation capability.

Full Definition

A sophisticated implantable device that combines cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator functionality. CRT-D devices provide biventricular pacing to improve synchrony in heart failure patients while maintaining the ability to detect and treat life-threatening arrhythmias through antitachycardia pacing, cardioversion, and defibrillation. These devices require careful programming of multiple parameters including AV and VV delays, and comprehensive follow-up protocols. Documentation must address both heart failure management aspects and arrhythmia therapy components.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from CRT-P which lacks defibrillation capability.

In Context

  • "The patient received a CRT-D upgrade due to declining ejection fraction and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia." — Device implant note
  • "CRT-D interrogation revealed appropriate antitachycardia pacing for ventricular tachycardia termination." — Device follow-up report
