A steam pop is a potentially dangerous complication of radiofrequency ablation that occurs when tissue temperature rises rapidly above 100°C, causing explosive vaporization of tissue water. This phenomenon creates an audible popping sound and can result in tissue disruption, coagulum formation, and increased risk of perforation or thromboembolism. Steam pops are more likely to occur with excessive power delivery, poor catheter cooling, or inadequate tissue contact. Prevention strategies include gradual power titration, adequate irrigation flow rates, and careful monitoring of impedance changes during energy delivery.
