Gadolinium kinetics describes the dynamic enhancement patterns of gadolinium-based contrast agents in myocardial tissue over time following intravenous administration. In normal myocardium, gadolinium distributes rapidly into the extracellular space and washes out quickly. Pathological tissues show altered kinetics: acute injury may show early enhancement with rapid washout, while chronic scar tissue demonstrates delayed enhancement with prolonged retention. These kinetic differences form the basis for various cardiac MRI techniques including first-pass perfusion imaging and late gadolinium enhancement. Understanding gadolinium kinetics is essential for optimal timing of image acquisition and accurate tissue characterization.
