LAD

Also written as: LAD — Left Anterior Descending

The major epicardial coronary artery supplying the anterior wall and septum of the left ventricle.

Full Definition

The Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD) is one of the three major coronary arteries, arising from the left main coronary artery and coursing in the anterior interventricular groove. It supplies blood to the anterior wall of the left ventricle, the anterior portion of the interventricular septum, and portions of the right ventricle. The LAD gives rise to diagonal branches that supply the lateral wall and septal perforating branches. Due to its extensive territory, LAD occlusion often results in large anterior myocardial infarctions and is sometimes called the 'widow maker' when the proximal segment is involved.
