Mitral annular plane systolic excursion, a measure of left ventricular longitudinal systolic function.

Full Definition

Mitral annular plane systolic excursion quantifies the longitudinal displacement of the mitral annulus during systole, providing an assessment of left ventricular longitudinal function. MAPSE is measured using M-mode echocardiography by placing the cursor through the mitral annulus, typically at the septal and lateral positions in the apical four-chamber view. Normal MAPSE values are generally ≥7mm at the septal annulus and ≥10mm at the lateral annulus. This measurement reflects the base-to-apex shortening of the left ventricle and can detect early systolic dysfunction even when ejection fraction appears normal. MAPSE is particularly useful in assessing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and monitoring cardiotoxicity.
