The myocardial work index is an advanced echocardiographic measurement that incorporates global longitudinal strain with simultaneously acquired blood pressure data to quantify the work performed by the left ventricular myocardium. This parameter provides insights into myocardial efficiency by distinguishing between constructive work (contributing to stroke volume) and wasted work (not contributing to ejection). The index is calculated using pressure-strain loops and includes components such as global work index, constructive work, wasted work, and work efficiency. This measurement may be more sensitive than ejection fraction for detecting subtle myocardial dysfunction.
