Full Definition
Relative wall thickness is calculated as twice the posterior wall thickness divided by the left ventricular internal diameter at end-diastole (RWT = 2 × PWT / LVEDD). This dimensionless parameter helps classify left ventricular geometric patterns and remodeling responses to various cardiac conditions. Normal RWT is typically ≤0.42, with values >0.42 indicating increased relative wall thickness. Combined with left ventricular mass index, RWT allows classification of geometric patterns: normal geometry, concentric remodeling (increased RWT, normal mass), eccentric hypertrophy (normal RWT, increased mass), or concentric hypertrophy (increased RWT and mass). These patterns have different prognostic implications.
