TAPSE
Also written as: TAPSE — Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion
Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, a measure of right ventricular longitudinal systolic function.
Full Definition
Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion quantifies the longitudinal displacement of the tricuspid annulus during systole, serving as an index of right ventricular systolic function. TAPSE is measured using M-mode echocardiography by placing the cursor through the lateral tricuspid annulus in the apical four-chamber view. Normal TAPSE values are typically ≥17mm, with lower values suggesting right ventricular dysfunction. This measurement is particularly useful in conditions affecting the right heart, such as pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, and congenital heart disease. TAPSE correlates well with other measures of RV function but may be limited in patients with regional wall motion abnormalities.
Usage
Usage note: Report in millimeters with normal values ≥17mm; consider RV loading conditions when interpreting.
