TR velocity

Peak velocity of tricuspid regurgitation used to estimate right ventricular systolic pressure and pulmonary artery pressure.

Full Definition

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) velocity is measured using continuous-wave Doppler echocardiography to assess the peak velocity of blood flow from the right ventricle to the right atrium during systole. This measurement is crucial for estimating right ventricular systolic pressure and, in the absence of pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary artery systolic pressure using the modified Bernoulli equation. TR velocity is an important parameter for detecting and monitoring pulmonary hypertension and right heart disease.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify units (m/s) and consider using contrast enhancement if signal quality is suboptimal.

In Context

  • "TR velocity measured 3.2 m/s, suggesting moderate elevation in pulmonary artery pressure." — echocardiography report
  • "The TR velocity could not be accurately measured due to insufficient regurgitation signal." — technical limitations note
