Full Definition

Wall motion score index (WMSI) is a semiquantitative echocardiographic parameter that provides objective assessment of global left ventricular function by averaging wall motion scores across all visualized myocardial segments. Each segment is scored as: 1 = normal, 2 = hypokinetic, 3 = akinetic, 4 = dyskinetic, or 5 = aneurysmal. The WMSI is calculated by dividing the sum of all segment scores by the number of segments analyzed. Normal WMSI equals 1.0, with higher values indicating worse global function. This index is particularly useful in stress echocardiography to quantify the extent of ischemia and in serial studies to track changes in ventricular function over time.
