ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors) are a class of cardiovascular medications that work by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, resulting in vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and decreased cardiac workload. These medications are commonly prescribed for patients with hypertension, heart failure, or following myocardial infarction as they provide cardioprotective benefits and improve long-term outcomes. In cardiac rehabilitation settings, ACE inhibitors may affect exercise responses, particularly blood pressure regulation during and after exercise. Unlike beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors typically do not significantly impact heart rate responses to exercise, making them more predictable for exercise prescription purposes.
