Physical deconditioning refers to the deterioration of cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and exercise tolerance that commonly occurs after cardiac events such as myocardial infarction or cardiac surgery. This physiological decline results from reduced physical activity during hospitalization and recovery periods. In cardiac rehabilitation contexts, deconditioning manifests as decreased VO2 max, reduced functional capacity, muscle atrophy, and orthostatic intolerance. Understanding the degree of deconditioning helps rehabilitation teams establish appropriate exercise prescriptions and set realistic progression goals for patients returning to normal activity levels.
