exercise intolerance

Reduced ability to perform physical activity due to abnormal cardiovascular, pulmonary, or musculoskeletal responses.

Full Definition

A clinical condition characterized by premature fatigue, dyspnea, chest pain, or other limiting symptoms that prevent a patient from achieving expected exercise capacity. In cardiac rehabilitation, exercise intolerance may result from deconditioning, cardiac dysfunction, medication effects, or comorbid conditions. Proper assessment and documentation of exercise intolerance patterns guide individualized treatment approaches and realistic goal setting.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from absolute contraindications to exercise, which prohibit activity entirely.
