The arterial switch operation is a complex congenital cardiac surgical procedure performed to correct transposition of great arteries (TGA). The surgery involves disconnecting the aorta and pulmonary artery from their abnormal positions and switching them to their anatomically correct locations. The coronary arteries must also be carefully transferred to the new aortic root. This procedure is typically performed in neonates within the first few weeks of life when the left ventricle is still capable of supporting systemic circulation.
