Full Definition

Transesophageal echocardiography is a specialized cardiac imaging modality that provides high-resolution ultrasound images of cardiac structures through a probe inserted into the esophagus. TEE offers superior image quality compared to transthoracic echocardiography due to the proximity of the esophagus to the heart and absence of intervening lung tissue. In cardiac surgery, TEE is routinely used for pre-operative assessment, intraoperative monitoring of cardiac function, evaluation of surgical repairs, and detection of complications such as air embolism. The technique requires conscious sedation and carries small risks of esophageal trauma.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from TTE (transthoracic echocardiography), which is performed through the chest wall.
