Full Definition

A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a mechanical pump that helps a weakened heart pump blood throughout the body. These devices can support the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both ventricles (BiVAD) and may be used as a bridge to heart transplantation, bridge to recovery, or as destination therapy for patients who are not transplant candidates. VADs require surgical implantation with careful attention to pump positioning, driveline management, and anticoagulation protocols.
