PCSK9 inhibitor

Also written as: PCSK9 — Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 9 Inhibitor

Class of lipid-lowering medications that block PCSK9 protein to reduce LDL cholesterol in cardiovascular patients.

Full Definition

PCSK9 inhibitors are a class of injectable medications that target proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), a protein that regulates LDL cholesterol levels. By inhibiting PCSK9, these drugs prevent the degradation of LDL receptors on liver cells, leading to increased cholesterol uptake from the blood and significant LDL cholesterol reduction. PCSK9 inhibitors are typically reserved for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or established cardiovascular disease who cannot achieve target cholesterol levels with statins and other therapies. Common examples include evolocumab and alirocumab.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize PCSK9; use full term on first mention.

In Context

  • "The patient was started on a PCSK9 inhibitor due to inadequate LDL reduction with maximum statin therapy." — Treatment plan
