periprocedural myocardial infarction

Heart attack occurring in association with coronary intervention procedures.

Full Definition

Periprocedural myocardial infarction refers to heart muscle damage that occurs in temporal relationship to coronary intervention procedures, typically defined by elevated cardiac biomarkers (troponin) above specified thresholds. This complication may result from side branch occlusion, distal embolization, coronary dissection, stent thrombosis, or prolonged vessel occlusion during the procedure. Current definitions vary between organizations but generally require troponin elevation 5-10 times the upper reference limit along with clinical or ECG evidence. Recognition and prevention of periprocedural MI is important for both immediate patient care and long-term prognosis assessment.

Usage

Usage note: Define diagnostic criteria when documenting; distinguish from other MI types.
