multivessel disease

Also written as: MVD

Coronary artery disease involving significant stenoses in two or more major coronary vessels.

Full Definition

Multivessel disease refers to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease affecting two or more major epicardial coronary vessels (left anterior descending, left circumflex, and right coronary arteries) with hemodynamically significant stenoses, typically defined as ≥70% diameter reduction. This pattern of disease is associated with worse prognosis compared to single-vessel disease and often requires more complex treatment strategies. Management decisions must consider the extent of ischemic burden, left ventricular function, and patient comorbidities. Treatment options include medical therapy, percutaneous coronary intervention, or surgical revascularization.

Usage

Usage note: Can be hyphenated (multi-vessel) but one word preferred; commonly abbreviated as MVD.
