New York Heart Association functional classification system for heart failure symptoms.

Full Definition

The New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification is a standardized system for categorizing heart failure patients based on their symptoms and functional limitations. Class I patients have no symptoms with ordinary activity, Class II have slight limitation with ordinary activity, Class III have marked limitation with less than ordinary activity, and Class IV have symptoms at rest or with minimal activity. This classification helps guide treatment decisions, prognosis assessment, and clinical trial enrollment criteria.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify class number (I-IV) and avoid confusion with ACC/AHA staging system (A-D).
