TEE

Also written as: TEE — transesophageal echocardiography

Transesophageal echocardiography, an imaging technique using an ultrasound probe inserted into the esophagus for detailed cardiac visualization.

Full Definition

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that involves inserting a specialized ultrasound probe into the esophagus to obtain high-quality images of cardiac structures. The proximity of the esophagus to the heart allows for superior image quality compared to transthoracic echocardiography, particularly for posterior cardiac structures, valves, and the left atrial appendage. TEE is commonly used for detecting cardiac sources of embolism, evaluating prosthetic valve function, guiding cardiac interventions, and assessing complex congenital heart disease. The procedure requires conscious sedation and carries small risks of esophageal injury or aspiration.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from TTE (transthoracic echocardiography) in clinical documentation.
