Full Definition

Glycemic variability refers to the oscillations in blood glucose concentrations that occur throughout the day and between days in individuals with diabetes. It encompasses both the magnitude and frequency of glucose fluctuations and is increasingly recognized as an independent risk factor for diabetic complications beyond average glucose control measured by HbA1c. High glycemic variability is associated with increased oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiovascular events. Common measures include coefficient of variation of glucose, mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE), and time in range. Continuous glucose monitoring has revolutionized the assessment of glycemic variability, allowing for more comprehensive evaluation of glucose patterns.
