Full Definition

Peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) is a non-invasive method for assessing endothelial function by measuring pulse wave amplitude changes in peripheral arteries, typically in the fingertips. The technique involves placing pneumatic probes on the fingertips and measuring pulse wave amplitude before, during, and after inducing reactive hyperemia through arm cuff occlusion. A normal endothelial response produces increased pulse wave amplitude (reactive hyperemia index), while endothelial dysfunction results in blunted responses. PAT offers several advantages over traditional flow-mediated dilation including operator independence, reproducibility, and ease of use. The method is increasingly used in cardiometabolic research and clinical practice to evaluate cardiovascular risk and treatment responses.
