aortic root replacement

Surgical procedure replacing the aortic valve, ascending aorta, and coronary artery origins as a composite structure.

Full Definition

A complex cardiac surgical procedure involving replacement of the entire aortic root, including the aortic valve, aortic annulus, sinuses of Valsalva, sinotubular junction, and proximal ascending aorta. The coronary arteries must be reimplanted into the new graft. Common techniques include the Bentall procedure (mechanical valve conduit), Ross procedure (pulmonary autograft), or homograft replacement. Indications include aortic root aneurysm, acute aortic dissection, or combined aortic valve and root pathology. Anesthetic considerations include prolonged CPB times, complex hemostasis, and potential for bleeding complications.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the type of conduit used (mechanical, biological, homograft, or autograft) when documenting the procedure.

In Context

  • "The patient underwent aortic root replacement with a 25mm mechanical valve conduit and coronary artery reimplantation." — Operative report
  • "Anesthetic planning for aortic root replacement included preparation for prolonged bypass time and potential massive transfusion." — Anesthesia plan
