ventricular assist device

Mechanical circulatory support device that assists or replaces the pumping function of a failing ventricle.

Full Definition

A surgically implanted mechanical pump designed to assist or replace the pumping function of the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both ventricles (BiVAD). Modern devices include continuous-flow centrifugal or axial pumps that provide either partial support (allowing native heart contribution) or full support (complete replacement of ventricular function). Indications include bridge-to-transplant, bridge-to-recovery, bridge-to-decision, or destination therapy in end-stage heart failure. Anesthetic considerations include anticoagulation management, device settings optimization, volume status assessment, and recognition of device-specific complications such as thrombosis, bleeding, or mechanical malfunction.

Usage

Usage note: Specify device type and manufacturer when documenting; distinguish between LVAD, RVAD, and BiVAD configurations.

In Context

  • "Ventricular assist device flows decreased during anesthesia induction, prompting immediate volume resuscitation." — Anesthesia record
