annuloplasty

Surgical repair of a heart valve's annulus to restore proper valve function.

Full Definition

Annuloplasty is a valve-sparing cardiac surgical procedure that involves repair or reconstruction of the valve annulus (the fibrous ring that supports the valve leaflets). This technique is commonly used for mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation where the valve leaflets are structurally normal but the annulus is dilated or distorted. Methods include suture annuloplasty or placement of an annuloplasty ring or band to restore the normal geometry and function of the valve, avoiding the need for valve replacement.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from valvuloplasty (repair of valve leaflets) and valve replacement.

In Context

  • "Mitral annuloplasty with a 28mm ring successfully eliminated the regurgitation." — Operative report
  • "The tricuspid valve underwent annuloplasty using the Kay bicuspidization technique." — Surgical procedure note
