An autologous pericardial patch is a piece of the patient's own pericardium that is harvested, prepared, and used as biological graft material for cardiovascular reconstruction. The pericardium is typically treated with glutaraldehyde to improve handling characteristics and durability. These patches are commonly used for closure of ventricular septal defects, aortic root reconstruction, valve leaflet extension, or great vessel repairs. The use of autologous tissue eliminates immunological rejection and provides excellent biocompatibility, though the material may be limited in quantity and quality depending on previous cardiac procedures.
