Full Definition

A biventricular assist device (BiVAD) is an advanced mechanical circulatory support system designed to assist the function of both the left and right ventricles simultaneously. Unlike single ventricular assist devices, BiVADs are indicated for patients with severe biventricular heart failure where both chambers require mechanical support. These devices can serve as a bridge to transplantation, bridge to recovery, or destination therapy. The surgical implantation involves complex procedures with inflow and outflow cannulation to both ventricles, requiring specialized postoperative management and anticoagulation protocols.
