cardioplegic arrest

Intentional temporary cessation of cardiac electrical and mechanical activity using cardioplegia solution during cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

Cardioplegic arrest is the deliberate, controlled stopping of the heart's electrical and mechanical function through the administration of cardioplegia solution, typically containing potassium. This technique is essential during cardiac surgery to provide a motionless, bloodless operative field while protecting the myocardium from ischemic damage. The arrest is reversible and the heart resumes normal function once the cardioplegia is discontinued and normal circulation is restored.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify as 'cardioplegic arrest' rather than 'cardiac arrest' to distinguish from pathological cardiac arrest.

In Context

  • "The surgeon initiated cardioplegic arrest before beginning the mitral valve repair." — operative report
  • "Myocardial protection during cardioplegic arrest was maintained with cold blood cardioplegia." — surgical procedure note
