Full Definition

Decortication is a surgical procedure involving the removal of fibrous, inflammatory tissue (cortex) from the visceral pleura to allow the underlying lung to re-expand normally. This procedure is commonly performed for chronic empyema, trapped lung syndrome, or thick pleural peels that prevent adequate pulmonary function. The surgery can be performed via open thoracotomy or VATS approach, depending on the extent and location of the fibrous tissue.
