Intraoperative TEE (transesophageal echocardiography) is the use of ultrasound imaging from within the esophagus during cardiac surgery to provide real-time assessment of cardiac structures and function. This technique allows surgeons to evaluate valve repairs, assess ventricular function, detect air bubbles, and monitor for complications during the procedure. Intraoperative TEE is considered standard of care for most cardiac surgical procedures and requires specialized training in perioperative echocardiography.
