Pannus formation refers to the development of fibrous, inflammatory tissue that grows over or around prosthetic heart valves, potentially causing obstruction or regurgitation. This tissue consists of fibroblasts, macrophages, and extracellular matrix that can progressively thicken and calcify over time. Pannus formation is more commonly associated with mechanical prosthetic valves and can lead to valve dysfunction requiring reoperation. The process is influenced by factors such as valve position, patient age, and inflammatory response. Echocardiographic monitoring is essential for early detection, as pannus can mimic valve thrombosis but requires different treatment approaches.
