aortic root vent

A catheter placed in the ascending aorta to remove air and blood during cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

An aortic root vent is a thin catheter inserted into the ascending aorta or aortic root to continuously aspirate air bubbles and residual blood during cardiac surgery. This venting prevents air embolism and maintains a dry surgical field when the heart is opened. The vent is typically connected to suction and remains active throughout the procedure until adequate de-airing is achieved. Proper vent placement and function are critical for preventing systemic air embolism, particularly to the coronary and cerebral circulations.

Usage note: Distinguish from aortic cannula used for arterial return from bypass circuit.
