A significant decrease in regional cerebral oxygen saturation detected by near-infrared spectroscopy during cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

Cerebral desaturation events are defined as decreases in regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) of more than 20% from baseline or absolute values below 50% as measured by cerebral oximetry. These events indicate potential cerebral hypoperfusion and increased risk of postoperative neurologic complications. Common causes include hypotension, low cardiac output, anemia, malposition of cannulas, or air embolism. Interventions may include increasing pump flow, adjusting cannula position, optimizing blood pressure, or increasing oxygen delivery.
