Full Definition

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest is a surgical technique where the patient's body temperature is lowered to 15-20°C and circulation is temporarily stopped. This allows surgeons to operate on complex cardiac structures in a bloodless field while protecting vital organs. The technique is commonly used in aortic arch repairs, complex congenital heart surgery, and procedures requiring extensive surgical exposure. Safe arrest times are typically limited to 30-45 minutes depending on the degree of hypothermia achieved.
