IABP

Also written as: IABP — Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

Mechanical circulatory support device that augments cardiac output through balloon inflation and deflation in the aorta.

Full Definition

An intra-aortic balloon pump is a temporary mechanical circulatory support device consisting of a balloon catheter placed in the descending aorta. The balloon inflates during diastole to increase coronary perfusion and deflates during systole to reduce afterload. IABP is commonly used in cardiovascular anesthesia for patients with severe left heart failure, cardiogenic shock, or high-risk coronary interventions.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other mechanical support devices in documentation.
