intraoperative TEE

Real-time echocardiographic imaging performed during cardiac surgery using a transesophageal probe.

Full Definition

Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography is the use of ultrasound imaging from within the esophagus during cardiac surgery to provide real-time assessment of cardiac structure and function. This technique allows continuous monitoring of ventricular function, valve competency, and adequacy of surgical repairs. Intraoperative TEE is considered standard of care for most cardiac procedures, providing immediate feedback about surgical results and guiding decision-making regarding additional interventions or adjustments to anesthetic management.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), which uses external probe placement.
