reoxygenation injury

Cellular damage that occurs when oxygen supply is restored after a period of ischemia.

Full Definition

Reoxygenation injury, also known as reperfusion injury, refers to the paradoxical tissue damage that occurs when blood supply and oxygen delivery are restored to previously ischemic tissue. During cardiac surgery, this phenomenon is particularly relevant when the aortic cross-clamp is removed and coronary perfusion resumes. The injury results from the generation of reactive oxygen species, calcium overload, and inflammatory responses. Strategies to minimize reoxygenation injury include controlled reperfusion, antioxidant administration, and gradual restoration of normal physiologic conditions.
