The rewarming phase is a critical period during cardiac surgery when the patient's core temperature is gradually increased from hypothermic levels back to 36-37°C. This process requires careful management to avoid temperature gradients that could cause air bubble formation, hemolysis, or neurologic injury. Rewarming rate is typically limited to 1-2°C every 10 minutes with arterial temperature maintained no more than 10°C above venous temperature. Monitoring includes core temperature, arterial and venous blood gases, and cerebral oximetry to ensure adequate perfusion during this high-risk period.
