systemic vascular resistance index

Body surface area-indexed measurement of afterload against which the left ventricle must pump.

Full Definition

A calculated hemodynamic parameter that represents systemic vascular resistance adjusted for body surface area, expressed in dynes·sec·cm⁻⁵·m². It is calculated as (mean arterial pressure minus central venous pressure) × 80 ÷ cardiac index. SVRI provides a more accurate assessment of afterload in patients of different sizes and is particularly useful in pediatric cardiac surgery and when comparing hemodynamic states over time. Normal values range from 1970-2390 dynes·sec·cm⁻⁵·m².
