TEE

Also written as: TEE — Transesophageal Echocardiography

Ultrasound imaging technique using a probe placed in the esophagus to visualize cardiac structures during surgery.

Full Definition

Transesophageal echocardiography is a specialized ultrasound imaging technique where a probe is inserted into the esophagus to obtain detailed real-time images of the heart during cardiovascular surgery. This monitoring tool allows anesthesiologists to assess cardiac function, detect air embolism, and guide fluid management. TEE is considered the gold standard for intraoperative cardiac monitoring in complex cardiovascular procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize as TEE, not tee, to distinguish from the golf equipment.
