Akinesis refers to the complete absence of myocardial wall motion in a specific segment of the heart, typically observed during echocardiography or cardiac imaging studies. This condition usually results from severe myocardial ischemia or infarction, where the affected heart muscle loses its ability to contract. Akinesis is more severe than hypokinesis (reduced motion) but less severe than dyskinesis (paradoxical motion). The presence and extent of akinetic segments help clinicians assess the severity of cardiac damage and guide treatment decisions.
