angiography
Pronunciation: an-jee-OG-rah-fee
Imaging technique using contrast dye to visualize blood vessels and assess for blockages or abnormalities.
Full Definition
Angiography is a medical imaging technique that uses contrast material (dye) and X-rays to visualize blood vessels and assess their structure and function. In cardiology, coronary angiography is the gold standard for evaluating coronary artery disease, allowing direct visualization of blockages, narrowings, and collateral circulation. The procedure can be performed via cardiac catheterization (invasive) or using CT or MRI technology (non-invasive). The resulting images are called angiograms and help guide treatment decisions.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from angioplasty (treatment) - angiography is diagnostic imaging only.
