Full Definition

Cardiac dyssynchrony refers to the loss of coordinated contraction between different regions of the heart, particularly between the right and left ventricles (interventricular dyssynchrony) or within the left ventricle itself (intraventricular dyssynchrony). This condition commonly occurs in heart failure patients with wide QRS complexes and results in reduced cardiac efficiency and worsening symptoms. Dyssynchrony can be assessed using echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or nuclear imaging techniques. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing is specifically designed to restore synchronous contraction and improve outcomes in selected patients.
